Rated Saltburn 9/10

Something about Emerald Fennell works for me. A lot has to do with the visuals she pursues alongside cinematographer Linus Sandgren, who would go on to collaborate with her on Wuthering Heights, a movie that also took me in with its shots. But there definitely seems to be a vocal and influential contigent in the Filmnerdsphere that reacts viscerally against all her film work. Perhaps it has something to do with her father being a notable jewelry designer and so being something of a nepo baby. But I only learned today that she was an actor on a lot of prestige shows before serving as the showrunner for Killing Eve, which may explain the pointedness of the personal vitriol people reserve for her. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if she's said something tone deaf and problematic when it comes to her views of feminism or class, but people tend to be far less forgiving when it's an actress. Anyway, Saltburn was just kind of a wild ride, from the opening moments of "Zardok the Priest" blasting over images of Oxford through to a "Murder on the Dancefloor" music video starring a bunch of schwang. I'm seeing the critical mob complain about a lack of subtlety in the writing and, sure - but the movie is obviously such a sensory experience first and foremost that it seems silly to skewer it as if it were meant to be subtle.
