Rated Diane Warren: Relentless 5/10
I'm trying to watch more documentaries in the early morning while I prepare my kids' lunches and wouldn't you know it, this interesting artifact from the latest Oscars race was available through the muck and mire that is Hoopla's catalog. The documentary is a little tropey. Driven by talking heads, - the novelty here being that many of those talking heads are major music stars - Relentless delves into Diane's childhood and intercuts with scenes from her modern life. There's a lot to learn, but I do feel like the tragedies of her lost pet and the elusive Oscar campaign were leveraged in a perfunctory manner. However, that relationship with her parents and her mother in particular turned out to be more than a backdrop. It's a driving force for her entire career. And that was fascinating. So I learned a lot! And now I'm going to have a hard time joking around about Diane's future nominations. And yes, I believe she should have won in 2015 now. I'm becoming a Diane truther, Jerry!
