Rated Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu 4/10

This review may contain spoilers. I assume there's something about Dave Filoni's psyche when it comes to the "letting go" aspect of the parent-child relationship. I don't know if he's a father. I don't know if he has a complicated relationship with his own father. Maybe George Lucas is his spiritual father. There's this odd beat (among many odd beats that I mostly chalk up to "we bought Lucasfilm, but we did not asborb the knowledge of how to make a compelling adventure movie, oops") - this odd beat where Grogu is "talking" to the alien fisherman and he says, "Hey, your father may never wake up from his poison coma. You have to learn when to say goodbye" or something to that effect. But it obviously rings hollow because nowhere in the rumble of this little sandworm did we hear that the Mandalorian was going to die. Not for one second do we think Filoni and Favreau have the guts to kill the cash cow, even when his udders are producing less cash than forecasted. And also, the movie just hasn't *done* anything with this relationship for it to build up to a big goodbye. It's even less believable than the end of the second season. And yet, they felt it was necessary to throw this line in there and gesture flaccidly at the idea that this might be The End and little Grogu might have to adventure on his own. Why, I wonder? Deep down in their hearts, do they wish they could actually advance the state of this moribund franchise and explore new frontiers rather than be shackled to the interests of their corporate families, much as Rota wants to be his own Hutt and break all ties to his crime family origins? The Babu Friks were the high point. Two stars.
