Rated Mistrial 2/10

Part of my "movies released exactly 30 years ago" project and uh....

Mistrial really thinks it's presenting an ethical struggle when it depicts a reckless cop who kills two innocent people in perceived self-defense and then gets the evidence that the person he was after was innocent without a proper warrant. There's a conversation with a judge which is supposed to make us feel like maybe it's wrong for courts to refuse evidence that was illegally obtained.

Thirty years later, we have much more insight into how much these procedural rules are broken by the criminal justice system. We know a lot more about qualified immunity and the system that shields cops like Bill Pullman's character from any type of accountability. It's almost fascinating how much this fails as copaganda with the decades of additional scrutiny.
