Rated Colours of Time 8/10

TL;DR: Go see this Klapisch movie—it will take you on a journey through time, love, art history, music, and Paris! The movie begins with a rather peculiar and improbable premise, which sets the stage for a captivating storyline that deftly jumps between two moments in time. 2024, Normandy: An abandoned house has remained untouched until a real estate project threatens to replace it with a Big Beautiful Mall™. A search for the rightful heirs uncovers around thirty cousins from very diverse backgrounds. As they visit the house, they discover old photographs and a mysterious painting. These fragments awaken memories that transport them back to France in 1891—through slumber, imagination, and eventually… ayahuasca, for the most immersive experience in rewriting the past! Despite a few minor weaknesses (notably a couple of weaker supporting performances and an overly idealized portrayal of the past—where even sex work is depicted as a cheerful affair), the storyline unfolds with grace. It weaves together multiple subplots into a single, powerful a-ha moment, culminating in a burst of joy, artistic beauty, and love. And I finally understood what French Impressionism was really about: not just painting what you see, but capturing the shimmer of a moment before it disappears — like light on the Seine, or a breeze through the trees. Overall: A stimulating, feel-good—but not foolish—movie, with surprising depth and resonance.
