Rated The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 10/10
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" is one wild ride. This book takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions and surprises that'll keep you wanting to know what happens next.
What I found interesting was the format of the storytelling. Sometimes we see the world through Evelyn's eyes, and other times it's through Monique's perspective. It keeps you on your toes and adds a unique flavor to the narrative. It is both the story of Evelyn Hugo, and the story of an Evelyn Hugo-ed Monique Grant.
When I first heard about this book, it was often talked about as if it really is just a history of Evelyn Hugo. After having read it, I know now it's the story of Evelyn Hugo as told by Monique Grant. I couldn't help but wonder if the book would have been as famous and effective if it was solely about Evelyn Hugo without the whole biography and Monique Grant twist. Honestly, I don't think so. The twist at the end is what takes the ending from just "And that was Evelyn Hugo" to a whole new level of mind-blowing.
Evelyn Hugo is every woman in the world. She's not your ordinary character; she's a force of nature. She embodies the struggles women have faced throughout history, especially in a world dominated by men. She's relatable in ways that hit you deep, and you can't help but root for her every step of the way.
But liking or hating Evelyn Hugo is never that simple. Just like her life, it's never that simple. There are parts of her that I admired, like her incredible bravery to do things that the world would hate her for just to protect the ones she loves. Yet, there were moments when I wanted to shake some sense into her for being reckless and inconsiderate of how her actions and decisions might affect others.
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" is the perfect reminder of why I love reading fiction like this in between my epic fantasy adventures. It feels good to dive into stories about people who feel so real, they could be your next-door neighbor or that random person you pass on the street. Evelyn Hugo is so wonderfully human that you can't help but see a bit of yourself in her.
Grab a copy of this book, it's a journey you won't want to miss.
