Rated Star Wars: The Force Awakens 6/10

It finally hit me that, for everything it’s become in the intervening decades, the Original Trilogy possesses a fundamental coolness that the prequels & sequels could never get a handle on. It is, after all, a product of the 70’s. Even Luke’s hero’s journey in the OT is, at its core, a quest for coolness. He goes from an annoying, totally uncool teenager to Jedi Master, the definition of cool in the Galaxy. I’m not sure there are any cool characters in <b><i>The Force Awakens</i></b>. Poe is likable enough, but he’s a full-blast hot-shot from the get, a classic blunder of the try-hard. Finn is profoundly uncool. He’s at his best as a blunt object pushing the story forward, but when he tries to use his brain, or to follow his emotions, he’s just awkward & clumsy. Rey would probably be a good hang. She’s resourceful & friendly, and seems open to new experiences, but personality-wise, she’s a bit of a blank slate. Maybe she’ll be cool one day, but it’s going to take a few years of hanging around other cool people before she finds her footing. There is a darkness to Kylo Ren, and he represents true danger (always cool), yet like Rey, he hasn't quite grown into himself. While the Dark Side undeniably exudes a certain level of coolness, it seems like the Force is in charge of him, rather than the other way around.  Plus, Goth kids are never cool.
