<div>Shirley Jackson's writing reminds me of a less murdery Patricia Highsmith. Though they're very different in some respects, they both write in a straightforward manner that gets right to the unsettling bits and the slow unraveling of people in mid-century America, burdened by expectation. I didn't all out love every single story here, but all of them are satisfying in at least some small way.</div>
