I waffled a bit between three stars or four because there are too many damn characters to keep track of and sometimes the writing is bogged down in superfluous detail, but I kinda get that was part of the point -- that our histories are complex, and the English class system could really muck things up for people.<br><br>You can tell this is a first novel -- though it was released as Jean Marsh's second, she wrote this one first. Big ambition, sometimes shaky in execution. Still liked it, but would recommend her other two books first.
