Rated Possession 10/10

It’s a very curious book - essentially a Victorian romance about two modern scholars trying to find out the truth about an actual Victorian-era romance. The high degree of difficulty here is that Byatt has thoroughly invented two Victorian poets and gives them a fully fleshed out existence, complete with fragments of their body of work, letters, journals from contemporaries, modern academic controversies, etc. The fact that it’s both convincing and compellingly readable is kind of miraculous.
