Rated The God of Small Things 10/10

Wow. Correctly well-regarded, and on my favorite topic - the way individual lives fit into the big sweep of history. In fact, it’s very explicitly about that - the title refers to the contrast between Big things like imperialism, bigotry, politics, police power and the Small, intimate things of interpersonal relationships, and how the latter are shaped by the former, “an era imprinting itself on those who lived in it,” as Roy puts it. In particular, it’s about a twin brother and sister in the Indian state of Kerala, and about how their lives were devastated by incidents in their childhood. A little tough to get into and very intense, but really masterful and gripping.
