Rated Record of a Spaceborn Few 8/10
Third in a very loosely connected and delightful series, this edition takes place on the Exodan Fleet a set of vast ships that have carried humans for generations. It's a little bit of a travelogue around the Fleet, looking at the customs and practices that sustain it in a detailed way, as well as the relationships between the humans on the Fleet and the other humans and alien species who occupy the rest of the galaxy. Each of the characters has their own arc that add up together to a somewhat slight plot for the book as a whole; the point of this and Chambers' other books in this series is to just enjoy the possibilities of the very well-thought-out universe she's created. Particularly interesting to read a book about how humans deal with isolation, resource scarcity, confinement, and uncertainty in the midst of (gestures at everything). Also nice to read something that's premised on the somewhat implausible idea of a long-term human future right now. Each of these three books could be read on its own and stand alone, but they're much richer in context with each other, and I highly recommend them if you dig sci-fi at all.
