A classic for a reason; a lovely and lyrical intimate portrait of a Black woman living in segregated early-20th-century Florida. There isn't one overarching plot - more like a series of episodes - but it all flows together really well, and there are pieces of imagery and turn of phrase and observations that stop you in your tracks.
