Rated The Odyssey 10/10
I’ve never actually read it before, even as I knew the gist of the story; all the exciting stuff you learn about as a kid makes up the middle third or so of the book, and half of it takes place after Odysseus returns. It’s a beautiful and very accessible translation - very intentionally told in modern, simple language instead of the big echoing profundity that classics are usually translated into. Highly recommended especially for Wilson’s introductory essay in which she - the first woman to do a published translation of the Odyssey in English! - describes the world of the poem and her approach to translating it. Wilson is very thoughtful about not just portraying this as a heroic story centered on one royal man but telling the stories of the other people in the world.
