An engaging novel sitting at the intersection of historical fiction and fantasy, set in the era of African colonization and slavery and focused on the early days of the author’s birthplace, Liberia. It’s terrific for the first maybe 60%, then rambles for a while and rushes at the end, but it’s rich and adventurous and draws you into caring about the characters. It’s the author’s first novel and I will definitely read more by her.
