Rated The Story of the Lost Child 8/10
Emotionally compelling/grueling conclusion to Ferrante's four-part masterwork about two lifelong friends. This last installment covers three decades in the lives of two women whose childhood experiences in Naples continue to haunt them even as their lives took different paths; their relationship is incredibly fraught and entangled with family, politics, romance, crime and career. The title of this one is sort of a spoiler, and as a reader I spent a lot of the book distracted by the question of which of the several children we meet is the titular lost one. This book reflects back on the events of the earlier books - particularly the first - as the characters age; it's definitely not a standalone work, but the whole series is extremely good and well worth reading for its intricate and engaging plot and minutely detailed investigation into gender roles, family dynamics, and the culture of Italy.
