A brief, weird, fascinating and engaging piece of sci-fi. It's a first-contact story, always a sci-fi staple, and this time it takes the form of a sort of ecological restoration project in which the ecosystem is a war-torn earth, the endangered species are humans and the researchers are powerful aliens interested in genetic engineering. It's very sociologically-minded (which is not to say it isn't suspenseful), asking questions about how humans behave, power relationships, the fuzzy line between coercion and cooperation, and the ethics of inter-species dynamics. It's not set out in simple terms like "are the aliens good or bad" - it manages to build out a rich, complex world in a short time. Reminiscent of [b:Rendezvous with Rama|112537|Rendezvous with Rama (Rama, #1)|Arthur C. Clarke|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405456427l/112537._SY75_.jpg|1882772], another of my favorite first-contact stories. The first in a series, and I feel certain I'm going to read the second and third because I want to see how it unfolds.
