Hilary Mantel is just incredible. She can make a conversation between two people about a third person as vividly grim and cruel as a scene where a mob decapitates an aristocrat. You get a lot of different viewpoints in this one, so you get to switch back and forth between which character is rationalizing their own actions, creating a lot of moral ambiguity. It's a little messier and a lot longer than Wolf Hall or Bring Up the Bodies, but it's super-compelling. Also was fun to read about the French Revolution while visiting France (although some of the museums were full of spoilers).
