A very vivid and atmospheric fantasy, at times shading into horror; it riffs on classic fantasy tropes in a fictionalized Eastern-European context, with a well-thought-out sociology and system of magic. A little too much plot, so the pacing is weird, and a couple of things are annoyingly tropey - there’s a major character who’s a miserable jerk for no reason other than that he needs to be structurally to create tension, for example - but overall it’s quite good if fantasy is your thing.
