Holy cow, this book. A Chinese-American family in Ohio has their life upended by the disappearance of a daughter. This book is remarkable in how it gives you the sense of subjective perspective, the unsaid things and memories, of a whole family - sometimes it will shift in-scene, seamlessly, and everyone's motivations and viewpoints are so real and so well-defined that it just works. The same thing with moving back and forth through time - it's all about how moments set the terms for relationships across decades. Beautiful writing, compassionate, very sad. There's just so much in it; highly recommend.
