Rated The Last Black Unicorn 8/10

A bright and unusual memoir. Tiffany Haddish is an exceptionally funny person but this is not a "funny" book; it's an intimate, straightforward and confessional story of the things she's come through on her way to her belated success. Stylistically, it feels like a face-to-face conversation, and it's arranged thematically rather than strictly chronologically; Haddish talks about her troubled childhood, abusive relationships, scrabbling her way through the standup circuit, and funny celebrity encounters with people she never thought she'd meet, all with a similar breezy frankness. It's definitely worth a read.

One thing to note that falls weirdly with me is that it was co-written by the sort-of-odious Tucker Max, who now has a ghostwriting business. But it feels enough like her stand-up and interview voice that it seems obvious that it's very as-told-to - a lightly edited interview rather than a joint effort. It's her story that comes through, not someone else's.
