Great mix of biography, history and admirably clear discussion of heavy ideas. Bakewell looks at the turbulent 20th century as seen through the eyes of existentialist philosophers, particularly Sartre and de Beauvoir's circle in France and the Germans alternately drawn to and repelled by Heidegger. I really dug the existentialists in college and the ideas are still pretty resonant and meaningful to me, but this book offered me some new context and angles on both the ideas and the people. I found this really compelling, even more than I was expecting to - it's quite well done.
