Rated Alias Grace 10/10

Highly recommended. A rich, lively and intense story of a woman imprisoned for murder in 1850s Canada. Intimate and creepy, it weaves very skillfully between different perspectives and different times - Grace in prison, Grace remembering her past, a psychologist trying to piece together her story. It's a very detailed look at the challenges of life as a poor woman in the nineteenth century with all of the values and constraints and cultural norms that govern her. All of the aspects of domestic life - sewing and quilting, caring for animals, cleaning and cooking and relationship with employers - have this overwhelming emotional weight, as they're all wrapped up in trying to stay within the proper sphere, abide by hierarchies and expectations, and maintain "virtue."
