Rated The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World 10/10

Highly recommended! Excellent biography of a naturalist/explorer/writer who was hugely influential in his time but somewhat forgotten today - this book is the first I'd heard of him. Humboldt lived through a time of revolutionary change in science, politics, and literature and was deeply involved in all three, with important impacts after his life and to the present day. Among the 19th-century luminaries whose lives he touched and who appear in this book are Goethe, Jefferson, Bolivar and Darwin.
