Intense, beautifully-written story of two friends growing up in postwar Naples. The view, from the mind of a perceptive young woman, of class and gender and sex and violence among the families in a tightly-knit neighborhood. Part of a 4-book series; it ends sort of abruptly and I assume I need to read the rest of the books now.
