This book is very clever and well-built and also very long and extremely formal. It's like if Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler came up with a story together, set it in New Zealand, and gave it to Melville to write, with some metatextual weirdness and (as far as I can tell) completely extraneous astrology thrown in there as well. I'm glad I read it but it's a little bit of a slog and you have to invest some time in it.
