Elinor Ostrom did solid scientific work to debunk the myth of inevitability of the tragedy of the commons. She studied successfully managed commons around the world and distilled a set of principles these successful examples shared.<br/><br/>Political-economical implication of this work is that dichotomy between privatization and regulation is false and commons governance is a viable option, not a mere utopia. The key to sidestepping the prisoners' game-theoretical dilemma is for actors to reject their isolated prisoner role and take organization and collaboration in their own hands.
