Rated A Quiet Place: Day One 5/10
Not a bad movie necessarily, but whereas the other movies always had something to show regarding how people might survive in this strange apocalypse, the movie where everyone has to learn how to survive from "Day One" has very little of these moments. I'm left wondering, did anyone in the movie even have thoughts besides I'm sad so I'm going to cry quietly or yell out so I can get snatched? Even the main characters had multiple head empty moments — "yeah, I'm just gonna walk in the middle of this crowd of hundreds of people, because certainly not one person will make any significant noise that will immediately put my life in danger". The angle of taking a risk to die for something personal was cute of course, but ultimately, so much was left on the table for just another "film where the characters have to be quiet while the monsters are next to them". I know it's the most obvious of suggestions, but a film that had intertwined a few different stories of different classes of people facing challenges scavenging, communicating, defending themselves, etc. in a brand new apocalypse and coming to different conclusions about how to survive would have been a much more engaging opportunity to continue the theme of exploring human reactions to insurmountable odds. Anyways, go watch Children of Men.
