Rated The Devil Wears Prada 2 1/10
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. (Caleb Hearon was the only good part.) Full on "Netflix lighting" that washes out any texture, shadows, or imperfections. Every scene looks like a corporate promotional video with flat and bright white lighting. The plot has so many loose ends it forgets to clean up many of them. I appreciated a few of the guest appearances, but there were far too many and meant for many irrelevant scenes just to show more famous people in the film. The scenes were choppy and had frequent cuts between shots, as compared to the original film's more natural longer shots. The beginning of the movie introduced Andy as a reporter and jumped immediately into her being laid off in the first few minutes, without any build up or introductions. Andy's relationship with Nigel is weirdly chummy right from the start, despite them not having interacted for decades. Once Andy makes Miranda pleased for the first time, Miranda ceases to be "cruel" at all and seems to be the opposite of her characteristic distanced role. Hathaway and Blunt felt bland and shallow. One of the concluding scenes has Nigel practically taking credit for orchestrating Andy's return to Runway, perhaps intending to highlight their budding (?) friendship with some gesture of goodwill, but instead takes away from Andy's accomplished journalistic career. The "action" moved very quickly and hardly left any part of the plot simmer for the audience. The dialogue felt forced, the quips were barely there, and even the audio felt stilted — dialogue was crystal clear when it should have been imperfectly heard in large rooms or crowds, the volume of the conversation was always level instead of changing with the flow of the scene. Even the music was too loud compared to the baseline and dialogue! What a disaster.
