Finding out after the fact that this was produced by the Safdie brothers makes a lot of sense. It has the same cascade of bad decisions building to a horrible crescendo, but at least it has a lot of weird characters and a bit more (dark) humor along the way. This one of those movies you watch when you want to feel better about your own life, assuming you have managed to make out in a less nightmare-ish manner.
