Rated The Whale 7/10
Darren Aronofsky knows how to show us misery on the screen, but this film takes a turn with empathy rolled in. Brendan Fraser dug deep to find this character and the emotional baggage that surrounds him like the extra weight in his body. His performance was Oscar worthy. However Sadie Sink’s Ellie was an enigma for me. I don’t think that type of person exists in the world. I enjoyed the flashes of reconnection she had with her father but at what cost? The reviews on this movie are all over the place. I agree that it seems like a stage play, but I’m confused why that is a negative? I liked the parallels to Moby Dick and what it says about being authentic. If I wanted to be super critical I could say this was using the formula from The Wrestler. But I liked The Wrestler so I consider it a plus.
