What an incredible premise! Kids from the same classroom all inexplicably disappear at the same time. Tensions and emotions are high, while answers are nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, I don't think we ever get an answer. I can't say enough about the set up and imagery used in this film. The shots of the running kids with their arms thrown back is almost iconic at this point. When a character (like Marcus) is affected, you immediately know and you know what he's going to do next. Although Amy Madigan is getting supporting actress nominations, the better performances come from Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. While the movie hints at them investigating and figuring out what is going on, they really only get close to whatever is going on without a plan nor a solution. Not everything needs an explanation, but the audience deserved more than what we got. The question I can't get past: what was Gladys's motivation? We understand Alex's motivation clearly, which helps serves what Gladys wants, but what she ultimately wanted was murky at best. I had similar issues with 'Barbarian', which writer/director Zach Cregger made before this film. Zach needs to learn that visualizing retribution and comeuppance is not always a conclusion.
