Rated The Boy and the Heron 3/10
This may be the last Studio Ghibili movie I'll ever watch. The last couple I have seen follow a similar framework where a young hero is thrust into a fantastical, cryptic world that must be traversed for some reason only to find out that the weird creatures represent either their family or an indescribable emotion. I think TBATH has rules that it follows in this story, but the audience is never told until after the fact. Oh, this young girl that controls fire? She's your mom. This doll in your pocket? It's the old lady that traveled with you that we forgot to tell you survived melting through the floor. This scar on your head from when you intentionally injured yourself? That comes from malice, which is also in the building blocks that the granduncle has to keep rebuilding every 3 days to control this world. No, the other one. That last paragraph is probably full of spoilers, but I didn't flag it because it doesn't make any sense. The animation is magnificent. The music/score was outstanding. The story was a big steaming pile of parakeet poop. Cool that some top tier US actors did the American voice overs, but it didn't matter.
