Rated Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning 9/10

Minor Feelings is not the kind of book I would call comfortable, and that is exactly why it matters. Cathy Park Hong writes about race, shame, language, art, anger, friendship, and the strange emotional weather of living inside a world that constantly asks you to explain yourself.

What I appreciated most is that the book does not try to make Asian identity soft, grateful, or easily digestible. It allows contradiction. It allows irritation. It allows the small, ugly, complicated feelings that often get edited out when people talk about belonging.

Not every part of the book maps directly onto my own life, especially because the Asian American context is different from a Vietnamese-Czech one. But emotionally, many pages still felt painfully familiar: the feeling of being visible and invisible at the same time, of being expected to translate yourself, of carrying inherited silence while also wanting to speak clearly.

It is sharp, intimate, sometimes uncomfortable, and often brilliant. A book I would not recommend as “easy,” but definitely as necessary.
