Rated Stone Butch Blues 9/10
Stone Butch Blues was recommended to me, and I do not think I was fully prepared for what kind of book it would be.
This is not a soft or easy read. It is love under pressure. Love with bruises. Love as shelter, danger, recognition, survival, and sometimes the only language left when the world refuses to call you human.
What stayed with me most was how physical the book is. Not just bodies in desire, but bodies at work, bodies in fear, bodies being watched, punished, misread, protected. It made me think about how much violence begins with the demand that someone become legible in the “right” way.
It is painful, direct, and sometimes almost too heavy to hold. But it also carries tenderness in places where tenderness feels nearly impossible. The kind that does not announce itself as beautiful, because it is busy keeping someone alive.
I expected an important queer classic. I found a book about class, gender, loneliness, chosen family, and the cost of surviving a world that keeps asking people to apologize for existing.
Not a comfort read. More like a witness.
