I'll be honest: I finished watching this several hours ago and have been waiting to review this because I'm not 100% on how I feel about it. That said, I do know it nailed the comic book vibe, it got Superman right, and it made me feel good, so for now it's getting 3.5/5. I'm going to say that it's a film that's greater than the sum of its parts. Yes, there's a lot it did do truly well, like, the acting. Many of these performances are easily my favorite versions of these characters (like Lois Lane) and others...not so much (Perry White). There are also performances I'm mixed on, such as Hoult's Lex Luthor who was great at playing a psychopath but at no point did he feel truly threatening to me. I also have a lot of gripes, such as Lex's monologue in the final fight, it felt out of place and felt too much like "generic movie villain starts talking instead of fighting back". Should've been when he imprisoned Superman. I also found this Jimmy Olsen to be too self-absorbed to the point that it was downright eye-rolling if not infuriating. Like, dude, accept spending a weekend with Eve so you can get the story. Grow up. The other problems I had is that I didn't find the film score to be memorable except when calling back to John Williams iconic score and frankly...I didn't find many scenes all that memorable. What I will remember are some individual lines like what's punk rock, quick moments (Clark and Jonathan hugging on the bench), the performances I did love, and how it made me feel. Rating: 3.5/5 (Pretty good)
